Local road voted most scenic in Northeast

The most enticing autumn drive in the northeast – and the second-best in the whole country – is right in our back yard. The Upper Delaware Scenic Byway – Route 97 – just won those distinctions in USA Today’s Best Scenic Autumn Drive Readers’ Choice Contest.

The 70-mile-long, two-lane road that winds along the Delaware River from Port Jervis in Orange County through Sullivan County and on up to Delaware County earned the award after four weeks of voting. It was the only road in New York state, out of 20 national roads, that the travel experts of USA Today nominated.

Those experts raved about its “breathtaking vistas and hiking trails, panoramic views, side roads to explore (and) fishing banks,” as well as the small towns, shops, restaurants and art galleries in places like Callicoon, Narrowsburg and Long Eddy.

Folks around here have long known about such scenic Route 97 Delaware River vistas as the curving stretch in Orange County called the Hawk’s Nest and the postcard-perfect view of the wide water between Cochecton Center and Callicoon and between Hankins and Long Eddy.

The Upper Delaware Scenic Byway came in just behind Michigan’s M-22 and ahead of the Kancamagus Scenic Byway in New Hampshire on the top 10 national list.
